Four Reading Center Freebies

Tired of coming up with new ELA centers? Here are four FREE centers to use in your classroom!

1. CVC Short Word Flashcards Fluency Center Activity- In this center, students are given CVC flashcards sets. There are 6 cards with 36 words on each card.

Use the flashcard sets to practice sight reading fluency with short vowel words. Here are some ideas:

Partner Reading- Students can work together by reading alternating words on the list. They can work to complete the list in a set amount of time for an extra challenge

Timed Reading- Students can set a timer with a goal of reading an entire card independently in the set amount of time!

Cross Out Game- Students work with a partner. One student selects a word and reads it. Both students find the word and cross it out on their own card. They continue without repeating any words until all the words are crossed out.

2. Roll the Dice Fluency Literacy Center- Roll the Die and Read a Sentence! In this center, students are able to roll the die and then read a sentence that is labelled with the correlating number from the die. Then, students will cross out the sentence that they read and continue. If desired, students can also copy the sentences on the response sheet or they can use the response sheet to create their own sentences. There is a response sheet to allow for differentiation and extension.

3. Prefixes Matching Literacy Center- In this center, students are able to match prefixes to their root word. Then, students will list their words on an answer sheet. If desired, students can also provide definitions or they can use them in a complete sentence. There is a response sheet to allow for differentiation and extension.

4. Synonyms and Antonyms Matching Center- In this center, students are able to cut out word cards and then sort the cards into their synonym and antonym pairs. Then, students will list their matches on an answer sheet. If desired, students can also provide the definitions of the synonyms and antonyms or they can use them in a complete sentence. There is extra space in the response box to allow for differentiation and extension.
