Meaningful Grammar Activities

Grammar is something that I didn’t learn to love until I was a teacher. Being that most students are not a fan, it is important that we are strategic about how we teach grammar. Here are some of my practices:

1. Mini White Boards- No, these are not just for math class! And my students LOVE them! I used to go round robin for whole group practice and it just wasn’t engaging enough. With white boards, every student is involved for every sentence every time.

2. Matching- This is a nice change of pace that encourages students to learn grammar terms. Rather than just learning a rote task, I want my students to learn what they are doing. We often match examples to terms that describe the featured grammatical elements.

3. Practical Application- We try to use some real life application activities.  It is important to make grammar skills concrete. Sometimes, grammar samples are extremely formal and do not mimic modern conversations or writing. One example is an activity that provides comic scenes and students enter dialogue to match the pictures. These practical activities really encourage true, applicable learning.

4. Differentiation- Language is fluid. Students need to switch up the methods that they are using to practice grammar skills, or they will have a very shallow understanding of the material.

5. Digital & Print- Some students prefer paper. Others prefer technology. I provide both avenues!

6. Practice, Practice, Practice- Grammar skills can't be mastered in a day. Typically, they can't be mastered in a week! Take time and provide plenty of opportunities for group and independent practice.

7. Definitions & Rules- It takes time to internalize grammar rules. Students benefit from having a clear reference sheet on hand. All of my grammar packets include a rules page! Check out a sample here

8. Games- Just like with any subject, my students get excited about grammar games. Capitalize on this and play some games!
