Teacher Summers: What to do?

What should teachers do over the summer? Nothing… well sort of!

It is no secret that teachers are insanely busy people. Sometimes I feel like I am dragging myself haphazardly to the finish line of the school year. By the time summer comes along, I am ready for a break. Sometimes, it takes me a few weeks of break just to catch my breath. With this in mind, here are my recommendations for teacher-must-dos for the summer:

1. Rest and recover- Let’s face it: teaching is exhausting. Even at its absolutely best, teaching requires so much time and energy. Take as much time as you need to relax. If you can’t get away, take a staycation. Visit friends or family who will let you relax.

2. Catch up on you- There are house projects that I push off all year long. Don’t stress- just throw those items on a summer list as they come up. At the beginning of the summer, plan to catch up on those tasks. It is amazing when all of the lightbulbs work in the bathroom. And when the squeaky sound in the door is fixed. And when the jungle of a garden is cleaned out. Regardless of your school list, do these things first because they drastically improve your own well-being and are often neglected.

3. Hobbies- My first trip of the summer to the library is always a favorite. Although it feels like you are constantly in motion during the school year, it doesn’t have to be that way over the summer. Do some things just for fun!

4. Teacher Things- Once the new school year is imminent, focus on the things that will make your life easier and better when you return to school. Some years, I get more done over the summer than other years. And both are absolutely fine! But when you start with the teacher-to-do list, start with the things that will make the beginning of the school year smoother!

5. Future Plans- Take some time to look into future plans that you put on hold. Want to go back to school? Want to earn a new certification? Want to plan an epic trip? Want to visit long lost friends? How about starting a side hustle? Refinancing? Take time to plan for the future!

Teachers: Thanks a million for all you do. Enjoy your summer.
