Why is it important to do a pre and post grammar assessment?

Intermediate grammar skills are tricky because they typically repeat themselves in various forms. For this reason, teachers need to ensure that they are teaching all of the standardized skills that students need to know rather than assuming that another teaching is covering the content. At the same time, teachers do not want to waste time repeating skills that students have mastered.

Pre-assessments allow teachers to identify a starting point (which will be different for each student!). With this data in mind, teachers can plan accordingly to target specific skills and review those that were mastered.

Post-assessments allow teachers to determine growth. I love receiving data that helps me determine if my teaching practices were effective. My students also LOVE to see their growth after putting in hard work. This also serves as an excellent precursor to PSSA prep because it specifically reveals review-worthy skills. If applicable, I also try to hand this data off to the next teacher so that they are prepared for their next group. I also have a few groups that I keep from year-to-year, so this is very informative in my own planning for the future growth of my returning students.
